Crikvenica as a base for Kvarner
Crikvenica sits on the mainland coast, about 35 kilometres from Rijeka and under two hours from the Slovenian border. No ferry, no queue at the port, and none of the final three hours of narrow coastal road that make Dalmatia tiring.
The town has two sandy beaches, which is rare on the Croatian coast. The water is shallow and warms early: by mid-June it is usually comfortable all day.
From Crikvenica you can reach the island of Krk, Opatija or the Plitvice Lakes in a day and be back for dinner.
