Where Crikvenica is
Crikvenica sits on the mainland coast of the Kvarner Riviera, in the north of Croatia, facing the island of Krk across a narrow channel. Rijeka is [[X]] km away; Zagreb is about ninety minutes inland.
It’s a former Habsburg-era spa town rather than a medieval port — which means a long seafront promenade, sandy beaches, and none of the cruise-ship traffic of the south.
Getting here without a ferry
The single practical advantage of this stretch of coast: you drive straight here. No ferry to book, no crossing to time, no queue in the August sun.

The beaches
Crikvenica is one of the few places on the Adriatic with a genuinely sandy seabed. That is the main reason families with small children come here instead of heading further south — you walk into the water without sandals and without worrying about sea urchins.
The town beach has the sand and the most facilities; the coves towards Jadranovo and Selce are quieter. [[Konkretne plaže po imenu — čeka lokalni unos.]]

The channel here is shallow and sheltered by Krk, so it warms earlier than open water and holds heat later. September is the underrated month: warmer sea than June, no crowds, lower prices.
Day trips
The island of Krk is reached by bridge, with no ferry queue, which makes it a straightforward day out. Rijeka is about half an hour away, and the Vinodol valley behind the town has the old fortified villages.

Eating out
One rule holds along the whole coast: places that display photographs of the dishes outside and have waiters calling to passers-by rarely cook for locals. Where tradespeople eat at midday, the food is usually better and cheaper.

Do you need a car?
From the centre of town, no — everything is walkable along the promenade.
From Villa MM, yes. The house is on the hillside and you drive down to the beach. For day trips to Krk, Plitvice or Opatija a car is effectively essential.
When to come
June — sea around 22 degrees, everything open, no crowds yet. The best value month. July and August — hot, busy, parking is work. Book early. September — warmest sea of the year, quiet, cheaper. Our own favourite. May and October — swimming is for the committed. Worth it if the house has a pool and a sauna.
